Open act, acrylics, 60 x 60cm, 2023

"Opening Act" is an abstract cubist painting that beautifully captures the essence of theatre. It explores the vibrant energy and anticipation that fills the air as the curtains rise, signalling the commencement of the performance. The painting is characterized by its dominant colours of yellows, oranges, and greens, which infuse the artwork with a sense of warmth, excitement, and liveliness. The composition of "Opening Act" is fragmented and geometric, typical of the cubist style. I have deconstructed the subject matter, breaking it down into multiple perspectives and facets. This approach creates a dynamic and multidimensional representation of the theatrical experience, capturing the various elements that come together to create a performance. Within the painting, bold strokes and angular shapes depict the actors, stage props, and set pieces, merging together in an abstract yet cohesive manner. The use of yellows and oranges conveys a sense of drama and theatricality, evoking the warmth of stage lights and the intensity of emotions expressed on stage. These vibrant hues pulsate throughout the artwork, symbolizing the energy and excitement that fills the theatre space. In contrast, the inclusion of greens introduces a fresh and lively element to the composition. Green represent the verdant backdrop of a theatrical scene as well as it symbolizes the growth and transformation that can occur through the power of storytelling. It adds a touch of harmony and balance to the overall colour palette, providing a visual counterpoint to the warmer tones.

cherries, ACRYLICS, 50 X 50CM, 2023

My abstract cubistic painting of still-life cherries is a captivating and visually arresting piece of art. It explores the subject of cherries in a dynamic and unconventional way, breaking away from traditional representational styles and embracing the cubist approach. The composition of the painting is characterized by bold and fragmented geometric shapes. The cherries are deconstructed and depicted from various angles, giving the viewer multiple perspectives to observe and interpret. This fragmentation adds an element of movement and energy to the artwork, inviting the viewer to explore the subject in a fresh and engaging manner. Vibrant colours play a crucial role in the painting, contributing to its overall impact. The use of vivid hues, such as deep reds, and bright green contrasting tones, creates a striking contrast against the canvas. These colours infuse the cherries with a sense of vitality, drawing attention to their lusciousness and tempting nature. The juxtaposition of geometric shapes and vibrant colours creates a visual tension that adds to the painting's allure. The angular lines and intersecting planes give the artwork a sense of dynamism and depth, creating a visually intriguing experience for the viewer. The cubistic style allows for a fresh interpretation of the subject matter, inviting the viewer to contemplate the essence of the cherries beyond their physical appearance.

As an artist, my goal has always been to explore the complexities of the human psyche and the various facets of the self. With my entry into the self-portrait prize, I aim to showcase my own delusional grandeur of myself through the lens of cubism. Cubism, with its fragmented and multi-perspective representation, perfectly embodies conflicting aspects of the self. My self-portrait serves as a commentary on the unrealistic and idealized versions of oneself that we construct and hold onto, despite the reality being far from it. The distorted and exaggerated features in the portrait capture the distorted reality that the mind creates, emphasizing the disconnect between the perception of self and the actual self. The use of bold colours and jagged lines in my piece reflects the chaos and confusion that often characterizes our thoughts and emotions. The fragmented representation of the face is a symbol of the nature of our personalities and the multiple identities we adopt to fit in with different circumstances and relationships. In conclusion, my self-portrait is a visual representation of the internal struggles and complexities of the self and an exploration of the unrealistic expectations that we place upon ourselves.
