McPherson Opera House
The McPherson Opera House, built in 1888, underwent an $8.5 million total rehabilitation and reopened in January 2010. Since that time, it has become the center for arts, entertainment, and culture in McPherson. The 488-seat auditorium is noted for its intimacy, acoustic excellence, and advanced technology. The many nationally touring artists who have played here have universally declared the venue as one of their favorites. The auditorium also has superb video projection and sound, and both film series and individual films are shown. A wide variety of lectures, demonstrations and presentations also take place in the auditorium.
There is more to the Opera house than its extraordinary auditorium. The Mary Anderson Arts Center, housed in the Opera House lower level, has two fully equipped rooms: one dedicated to clay with a kiln and four potter’s wheels, and the other dedicated to the rest of the arts. The McPherson Arts Alliance, which has its home at the Opera House, programs the Arts Center with classes for all ages in all media. The McPherson Recreation Commission offers morning classes for kids during the summer. The McPherson Arts Alliance also maintains an art gallery at street level with new shows every two months. The Alliance also hangs shows in the Opera House Heritage Gallery.
The McPherson Community Theater also counts the Opera House as its home. MCT is especially known for the musicals the company stages each year in June. “As good as Broadway,” some patrons have reported.
In addition to the above, the Opera House has a ballroom and two meeting rooms available for rent. The entire building is Internet accessible, and the rental spaces, including the auditorium, offer various AV options.
